Francis Piol Bol Bok (born February ), a Dinka tribesman and native of South Sudan, was a slave for ten years but became an abolitionist and author living in the United States. On , he was captured and enslaved at the age of seven during an Arab militia raid on the village of Nyamlel in South Sudan during the Second Sudanese Civil War. Bok lived in bondage for ten years before Born: February (age 40), South Sudan. The first civil war ended in but another broke out in Peace talks gained momentum in with the signing of several accords. The final North/South Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), signed in January , granted the southern rebels autonomy for six years followed by a referendum on independence for Southern Sudan.

  This is the true story of Lopez Lomong and how he was kidnapped from church as a six-year-old and taken to be a child soldier. He later escaped and was taken to a refugee camp where he lived for ten years. When he was finally taken to the United States, it was through a program in which a number of “lost boys” were brought to the U.S. United States Institute of Peace (–), and continues as a member of its board. From to , he was US Assistant Secretary of State for African a ffairs.   Over the last 50 years, the various conflicts afflicting South Sudan have caused massive displacements of people.
